Sri Lanka’s Sinharaja rainforest reserve to be quadrupled in size

Residing in southern Sri Lanka, the Sinharaja Forest Reserve has been officially declared by the regulators to be expanded fourfold through the integration of neighbouring woodlands into the endangered area. The forest reserve at present faces threats from hunting, logging, encroachment and gem mining. The new reserve which would span approximately 36 thousand hectares would assist in conserving a biodiversity hotspot most renowned for being home to a treasure trove of rare species. Also, an eminent UNESCO World Heritage Site, the newly proclaimed forest reserve site would pave way for both the fortification of the rainforest and sustainable and non-destructive forestry undertakings that are deemed vital to the livelihoods of resident communities.
