According to the Sri Lanka Railways and the Wildlife
Conservation Department, they have collaborated to launch a special programme
in a bid to prevent train-elephant collisions. Thus, the Railways Department is
now planning to install electronic sensor devices where those devices will send
a warning signal to the driver when the sensor encounters the presence of an
elephant, to keep a stop to these tragic, painful deaths of these majestic
mammals finally. Committee has recommended to; clearing of shrubs up to 30 metres
on either side of the railway tracks, enforcing train speed limits, removal of
obstructions in elephant crossings, building overpasses or underpasses for the
elephants to cross in a much easier way.
